It’s Here and it’s Scrumdillyumptious!
We are ever so excited to share with you our latest treasure in the artist + writer arsenal – The Sendak Mini! The Mini is a more compact companion for the minimalist adventurer who wants a lighter haul. It has all the charm of our classic Sendak: Waxed canvas, vegetable-tanned leather, lots of pockets, and a zip pouch. We’ve made the pen pockets a little wider to accompany water brushes and fountain pens based on your feedback. Roll it up and throw it in your bag and set out on an adventure...
We imagine Goldilocks would deem this one ‘just right’!

The Evolution Continues…
Our new and updated Rogue Backpacks and Marlowe Carryalls have been well-loved this summer. They’ve traveled from road trip to road trip, breaking in and evolving. Now we are coming to the end of our summer wanderings and are re-situating our bags, taking out bathing suits, sun block and errant rocks. We’ve turned the bags upside-down for a final tap, loosened the remaining bits of summer and refilled them with journals, pouches, pens and computers – just in time for Autumn.

The Rogue Backpack The Marlowe Carryall The launch of these two updated classics marks another milestone in the evolution of Peg and Awl. With the transition from using reclaimed WWII era gun straps for our leather handles to using locally-sourced vegetable-tanned leather, we are reaffirming the fellowship between ourselves and the materials with which we make. By creating beautiful and useful objects out of sustainable and responsibly sourced materials, we strive to change the way that we as individuals make, use, repair and reuse everyday objects. As our new bags leave our Philadelphia workshop and arrive at your doorsteps, what adventures will they see in your hands and how will they transform to become truly yours?
We still have some Antique Leather Bags remaining in the shop – if you’ve been wanting one now is the time, as these final specimens are finding fast homes all over the world!
p.s. We always share our adventures via Instagram + Insta Stories @pegandawl @pegandawlbuilt and @thebrotherskent and soon will be more thorough in the telling on our blog!

Since the early days of civilization, pouches have been a necessary part of everyday living. Used for holding money or other personal items, they preceded pockets on clothing and hung from belts with draw string fasteners. Our shapes and closures have changed to fit our times, but the utility remains constant. With the launch of 3 new pouches we now offer 8 different styles, each named for a variety of uses but all ready to hold your prized possessions!

When I was young my dad would take me to the local art store. I loved walking up and down the massive aisles overloaded with colourful tools and materials to make things with. I felt like Pippi Longstocking in the candy shop!
My challenge has never been acquiring supplies, but organizing them. Our boys, Søren and Silas, and I create Great Chaos across all surfaces with our collection of olde and new materials. We have desk caddies loaded with tools, scissors, pens, and pencils, and now, fitting in right alongside them, is our new Beatrix Artist Caddy. Named after Beatrix Potter – beloved in our house for her illustrations, storytelling, and her love of nature – our new caddy has been a great addition to our studio, adding another level of order to tame the chaos!
And for organization on the go, we’ve made some new pouches and updated classics. From our wallet-sized pouch to our tablet-sized pouch, our seven options will serve most of your traveling and tidying needs.
Be sure to check out our Of a Kind section where our remaining pouches with antique leather are on sale!

We continue to make new book necklaces with our favourite vintage leather scraps, adding new collections into the mix as the small batches of the olde are used up! We are also psyched to present some new classics using our brown and black veg tanned scraps – Harper and Jackson Book Necklaces and Mini Artist Sketchbook!
New Book Necklace Colors and Mini Artist Sketchbook
I first started making tiny books 11 years ago to give my favourite itty bitty leather scraps a proper home. Tiny beckons. The mini books lured people in at craft shows and fueled conversation. Soon after I added chains and the useable book necklace came to life!

Over the years people have shared the mini projects they have created with their book necklaces or mini sketchbooks with us, ranging from exquisite tiny drawings to collecting signatures and doodles at concerts, to gathering kids’ fingerprints – one woman even wrote her will on the pages of her Library necklace!
With the launch of our Harper and Jackson Book Necklaces and Mini Sketchbooks, Walter and I decided to embark on our own mini project that we’ve entitled The Tiny Portrait Project! Join us or follow along @pegandawlbuilt and @thebrotherskent, and of course @pegandawl on Instagram.
We cannot wait to see what you come up with! Share your work with #pegandawlmini and #pegandawlbinds and we’ll pick a few to share every week!

When the idea for The Sendak took hold, I was excited at the thought of bringing more organized ‘things to do’ on outings. And we’ve discovered, whilst perfect for the solo artist, The Sendak also turns out to be a sensational family centerpiece! For us it’s been fun way to engage with hungry boys during The Waiting at a restaurant, a lifesaver on long car rides, and ever-exciting to unfold and repack for each excursion. The more often we open our Sendak, the less often we get caught ‘Blue-facing’ – our family name for phone and tablet excess. Our hands criss-cross as we reach for coloured pencils, pens, erasers, and our minds ignite – pass your paper to the right, a round of exquisite corpse anyone?
An Unexpected Centerpiece
For most of my life I’ve carried things to keep me occupied – often in the form of books. They offered entertainment when stuck in a line or having arrived somewhere early – which I always did. I was pleased to be lost in a story or scribbling in a journal – unaware of the wait.

Whether your Sendak brings your own family together or accompanies you on solo en plein air excursions we know one thing: People dig ’em, ’cause we’ve been sending them out as quickly as we can make them!

This time of year has our hearts yearning for elsewhere. We packed our Weekenders – the first with the new veg tanned leather* – with journals, books, stuffed Sendaks and clothes and took off for Italy - first to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, then to Venice! We spent our days wandering the city streets – playing, sketching, and indulging in pizza and gelato. The new sounds and fresh perspective ignited a spark that our long winter had snuffed out. Our purpose for 11 days was to just be.

Companions Harper + Jackson Weekender with Veg Tanned Leather Journals and Journaling
I bought my first big journal in Venice after graduating from high school. It fell apart fairly quickly and its undoing revealed to me the secrets of bookbinding. I was determined to make a book that could withstand the abuse of everyday use and stuffing.
After a lot of trial and error I did it – and I’ve made a lot of journals since. At Peg and Awl we’ve offered a variety of sizes but the request for large journals is persistent. Finally – our Companion size, the first of our big journals is here!
Silas in my Rogue Bologna, view from a tower! Walking in Venice Søren with Little Rogue Weekender “No More Cameras!” This morning in Philadelphia, the sun shines brightly, the birds are singing, and the flowers are bursting out of the dirt. I’m content to find a spot in the woods, open a Sendak and draw all day long… I am documenting the flowers I see in my #100dayproject on Instagram @thebrotherskent – ’tis a yearly project that begins April 3rd – it’s not too late to jump in!

Today our Chalk Tablets and Pads are still loved and completely relevant. They look great, and can be used for years, eliminating paper waste from love notes, reminders and countless lists. Now we’ve found a way to make them even better – we’ve replaced the chalk paint with a laminate chalk surface. It is both easier to clean and better for the environment! With this new surface, forget all of my warnings about not giving the chalk pencil to your little ones – this surface is pretty hard to destroy!
Love Notes, Lists, and Doodles
I entered a room Walter had just left and found on the floor a scrap of lumber – a cut off from a Tub Caddy I think – with a list on it. It fit perfectly in my hand. I ran outside to the backyard shop and within the hour we had our first iteration of the Chalk Tablet! This was nearly 10 years ago (Ten!).

This is how I love my winters – warm and sunny one day and snowy the next. All of this variety has me daydreaming of road trips and gardening, reading outside and abandoning my (city) hibernation. One day I’ll fill a Hunter with just the necessities, and the next it’ll be a Gatherer, filled to the brim with greater expectations for the day!
We are excited to share with you the next bags in our leather evolution: The Hunter and Gatherer. They are looking better then ever with their new vegetable tanned straps and refreshed branding!

Journal lovers, sketchbook keepers, and analog fiends! People of the books! We’ve finally constructed staple journals made from new locally sourced veg tanned leather in both black – The Jackson – and brown – The Harper – that are ready for your stories, musings and sketches. They are lined with antique textiles and of course still boast all of the Peg and Awl journal goodness, but unlike all of the others, these two are here to stay.

As always, we will still be on the hunt for antique and reclaimed leather and will continue to stock our shop with Of a Kinds as we make them. If these are what you are after, then you are in luck! We’ve filled our shop with small batches of French Grey, Bordeaux and some other scrumptious morsels. Unlike dear Jackson and Harper, these are quite limited – all part of the fun!
Morning Pages
I, Margaux, have been working in our new studio in our backyard for the last month, enjoying all of the light and solitude the tiny space offers. I’ve kept a journal for much of my life, but only recently have I set aside a time for morning pages just after dropping Søren and Silas off at school. This pause became a necessary and non-negotiable part of my day: a time set aside to clarify and purge and dream. Walter recently brought home a serving tray that we originally made in collaboration with Jersey Ice Cream Co. and Lokal Hotel, and I’ve been using it to haul my coffee or tea and other breakfast goodies out to the new studio. As a result of its usefulness, we’ve decided to add it to our Peg and Awl offerings – The Watson Serving Tray!
