Journal

Constructed from locally-sourced vegetable-tanned leather that is ready for your stories, musings and sketches. Inside you’ll find line-free Strathmore drawing paper – thick, hand-torn, acid-free pages that work perfectly with ink, pens both thick and superfine, pencil, charcoal, and a myriad of other mediums. The pages are each hand-stitched with archival linen binder’s thread, shaped and re-enforced with linen tape and tarlatan and finished with a red and golden headband. The books can be carried daily and beat up. They are strong creatures.

Foundlings

Foundlings is a collection that has come to life through the layering of hands that make: those that have caused to exist that which has been made and remade.

One end-of-winter morning, we ventured out into the last grey of the season-leaving, amongst sagging time-worn tables that house trash and magic. Flea markets are often secret repositories of history, and we were about to dive backwards some 200 years, as sparkly creatures, patiently waiting out their decades of idleness, nearly rose up from their tattered box to greet us. Farm animals, imagined animals, flowers, and other wonders of the natural world – painted by unknown hands in an unknown time, fairly pulsed with scintillating energy upon nests of scritchy, scratchy handwritten ledgers, lessons, and language, impeccably penned by generations past.

Our discovery of these mischievous old fellows has led to yet another transformation. A select few have been carved and cast to retain their child-like style and to celebrate the expressional whimsy of each nurtured creature, others have been selected to adorn walls, desk caddies, and journals. Now, in the 21st century, you bring your story to each piece, thus intertwining yours with theirs. What will future generations add to this great tapestry?

Foundlings Journal - a new old friend

I’d been watching @catherinemisook using a pre-release version of the Companion size Foundlings Journal on Instagram, and I knew that I really wanted one of my own — but always the thought lingered that maybe it was the special gifts of the Instagrammer, and not the journal itself, that made it so appealing. But I stalked Peg & Awl by DM until at last I could pounce on the Foundlings Jackson Journal: Moss (I call him my Green Dragon). And I haven’t regretted it!

I’ve never been happier with an online purchase or fallen in love with a journal so fast. The volume is a luxurious size, weighty in my hand, with creamy Strathmore drawing paper pages that have performed beautifully with everything I’ve tried so far, including pen & ink, fineliner, graphite, gel pen, and colored pencil. (Experiments with light watercolor are coming soon.)

The black leather is buttery and rich, so touchable yet sturdy; it’s going to wear beautifully. The binding all round is solid as a tank, and the book was only a tad stiff when I first opened it — a gentle touch with initial page turnings relaxed it easily, and now it opens reliably flat (as much as possible with its size).

This book should have my best art, but I’m also giving it my everyday jottings and inspirations, my scraps and sketches and musings and whatever else comes up. A journal of this caliber deserves to be used joyfully every day, for every reason.

Yes, it’s pricey. Handmade treasures just are. This isn’t some box store…

    It's a beautiful journal, I

It's a beautiful journal, I loved this design and soft leather cover. As it's a birthday present (early Jan) I didn't open it to the pages, but I'm sure it will soon be put to work and and become a loved treasure.

It was very nicely wrapped for shipping.
