The very first do-it-yourself Peg and Awl product! In the spirit of handmade wares and near-forgotten craft, our bookbinding kit not only offers a journal to fill with words and scribblings, but also teaches the art of hand-bound bookbinding.
The style of this book was influenced by my love of Anselm Kiefer and his book Transition from Cool to Warm, a book I picked up in Brussels one fine evening many years ago. It includes beautiful uncovered books that, in addition to housing extraordinary paintings, also show – with dirt and bendy corners – all of the love and travels his books endured.
Understanding the sewing process of bookbinding is the first step in making a sound book.
Details
Kit includes:
- 1 length of thread
- 1 bookbinder’s needle
- 2 linen tapes
- 1 instruction booklet
- 1 sheet of illustrated steps
- Hand-torn, line-free Strathmore drawing paper (80 lb. [130 g/m²])
- 40 pages (20 sheets)
Glue is not included. Wheat paste is easily created by combining one part flour to four parts of hot water. Bleached flour works best.

i love this little size! i’d wanted to get a set of kits for so long but i wasn’t sure what i’d use the journals for…so i decided to use it for whatever strikes me & not having a purpose or goal has made it my favorite. i also made one for my child with a pokemon cover & we’ve started journalling together every day. SO MUCH FUN!!! such a lovely inspiration, i’m so happy i went for it & got these treats.

I love this little book! The pages are off white, nice weight, similar to drawing paper and have a slightly torn edge that make it unique. All the signatures were perfectly cut/folded and had the holes.
The kit came wrapped in paper, which was also the illustrated instructions (so be carefully opening the little package). Everything I needed was included, needle, string, and two sets of instructions. I especially valued the illustrated instructions as I’m a visual learner and these instructions in particular helped to clear up a couple of confusing areas.

I love this kit! The directions are clear and concise, and the diagrams are really easy to follow and cute. The materials are a great quality, and I love how everything you need is included in one little wrapped up package!
